Warsaw is located on the Vistula River and is the largest city in Poland. It is not considered as beautiful as some European cities, but it has a captivating story. Warsaw is known as the "Phoenix City" due to the will to rebuild after war, particularly in relation to the damage occurred in WWII when 85% of buildings were destroyed.

Old Town is the most popular tourist destination in Warsaw. It was the area of the city that was rebuilt by citizens. This process involved looking at old photographs, prints, and paintings. This reconstruction earned Old Town a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Attractions in Old Town including the Royal Castle which is now a museum detailing the history of the area. There is also Old Town Market Square which has cafes, restaurants, and bars. In the middle of the square is a statue of a mermaid. The mermaid is the symbol of Warsaw and can be seen on many statues throughout the city, as well as on the coat of arms. The reasons behind using the mermaid figure are not fully known.

During summer the Old Town Square becomes a stage for music concerts and theatrical performances. Frederic Chopin spent twenty years in the city and there is evidence of this in the city's music culture, various monuments dedicated to the composer, and the highly interactive Chopin Museum.

An interesting landmark in Warsaw is the Palace of Culture and Science. It is the tallest building in Poland and is visible from most parts of the city, meaning that the viewing platform on the top floor is a great place to take in the view. The building was commissioned by Stalin and completed in 1955 as a gift from the Soviet people. The building initially was not accepted by the Polish people and still isn't by some who refer to the building as the "Russian Wedding Cake".
